Man Bailed Over Gateshead Baby Death

Northumbria Police have bailed a 23 year old man after the death of a baby boy in Gateshead.

The two month old was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Gateshead, with serious injuries following an incident in the town in the early hours of Saturday.

He was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, where he died at 9.50am on Sunday.

A 23 year old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and has now been bailed.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Potts, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is a tragic loss of a very young baby and our thoughts are with those affected.''

He said a post-mortem examination has not yet been carried out and inquiries are continuing.
