Great North Run: Road Closures & Public Transport

More than 50,000 people will be running the 13.1 mile road race from Newcastle to South Shields this weekend.

The race starts at 10.40am on Sunday (16th September), straight after the wheelchair race which starts at 10.10am and the women's elite race at 10.15am.

Runners will head from the Central Motorway in Newcastle to South Shields sea front.

Roads throughout the route will be affected by closures and diversions, which will be signposted.

Road Closures

Saturday, September 15th from 8pm onwards:
The North West Radial route from Cowhill to the junction with North Terrace, this will also affect parts of Central Motorway.

Sunday, September 16th from 8.45am:
Central Motorway to the Tyne Bridge
Tyne Bridge to Gateshead Highway
Gateshead Highway to Park Lane roundabout

From 9am in Gateshead:

A167 at Park Lane roundabout to A184 Felling by-pass
A184 Felling by-pass to White Mare Pool
A183 Coast Road

From 9.45am in South Shields:
A194 Leam Lane from White Mare Pool to A1300 John Reid Road
A1300 John Reid Road to A183 Coast Road

Roads will re-open once all runners have passed through and the roads have been cleared which is usually around 5pm in Newcastle and Gateshead

Runners and spectators are being urged to use public transport to get around on the day.


Tyne & Wear Metro


There are extra Metros running all day.

The nearest Metro station to the race start is Haymarket and South Shields is nearest to the finish line.

If you need to use a car for part of your journey, there?s free* parking at Metro stations (*except at Heworth and Felling, which are £1.20 all day).

Shuttle Buses

Shuttle buses provided by Go North East and Stagecoach will run:
Between Newcastle Haymarket, Heworth Interchange and Bents Park from 7.00am until the roads close for the race, and then from about 12.30pm to 5.00pm.

Between Bents Park, South Shields Metro station and South Shields Ferry landing from 9.00am until about 4.30pm.


Shields Ferry

The Shields Ferry between North and South Shields will operate extra crossings and will run from 8.45am to 6.00pm.

Buses will operate between the ferry landing and Metro station in North Shields.
