Children Tested For Ebola In Newcastle

Two young children are being tested for the Ebola virus in the RVI.

The children were taken to the RVI yesterday and are being tested for the virus after arriving in the UK from Africa.

Public Health England say it's unlikely the pair have the disease - but they're being monitored in the infectious diseases unit as a precaution.

It's not yet known where in Africa the pair are from or when they arrived in the UK.

They are also being tested for malaria.

Public Health England say results would take 24 hours - with an update not expected until Friday afternoon.

A spokesman would not confirm the age or gender of the children but described them as young children, rather than teenagers.

Newcastle's RVI is the only hospital in the North East region able to treat cases of Ebola - it's one of three centres outside London.
