MTV award winners

This year's MTV Europe Music Awards took place at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

Host, Katy Perry kicked off the proceedings with a typically outlandish performance of her No.1 hit, I Kissed A Girl, which saw her arrive on stage sporting American Football gear, perched on top of a giant cherry chapstick.

Sugababes presented the award for Most Addictive Track to Pink, who bounded on to the stage singing 'I guess I should thank my husband' to the tune of her prize-winning hit, So What, before thanking her fans and vowing to 'see them on tour'.

Beyoncé made her first EMAs performance for five years, giving a stunning performance of her new single, If I Were A Boy, backed by her all-female band. Vocally she was on tip-top form, although the fashion police have been informed of her 'futuristic'-style stage get-up.

The big winners of the night were Britney Spears, who accepted her awards for Act of 2008 and Album Of The Year via a pre-recorded message and rock band, 30 Seconds To Mars, who scooped the Video Star and Rock On prizes.

Other notable performances came from Take That, who treated fans to their first performance of their new single, Greatest Day, while Las Vegas band, The Killers gave a Blankety Blank-style performance of their new single, Human. However, Urban Act winner, Kanye West proved exactly why he should stick to rapping and not singing, giving a tuneless performance of latest track, Love Lockdown before joining the UK's finest, Estelle for their first ever live performance of American Boy.

The awards were dominated by the election result - host, Katy Perry at one point sported an Obama dress, Estelle and Kanye West performed in front of an Obama backdrop and Paul McCartney, who received a special award in recognition of his contribution to music, thanked the American public for voting in the Democrat.
