Is it any good? This is a real marmite film – people will love it or hate it. Even though Watchmen is a stunning and vivid (although dark at the same time) adaptation of a graphic novel (it’s like a comic book) and involves superheroes this is not a movie like Spider-Man, Batman or Superman. It is more like a drama that plays out like a 1950s film noir, cloak and dagger type affair. The script is intense, you will need to engage your brain and pay attention – this is not a popcorn movie – and at 163 minutes long (or two hours and 43 minutes) it is long. Rather than just making an uber-movie, they might have been better off splitting it in two therefore making it easier to absorb and easier to enjoy. However, if this is your bag then you will love it and the length really won't matter. Visually stunning with complex characters and some brutal imagery, Watchmen is a slow-burning sensory experience that is best enjoyed in a cinema with as big a screen as possible and with a killer sound system. This is a landmark film for the genre that will impress, amaze and grip but it is not light entertainment.
