The Damned United
Ok, on paper, this doesn't sound like the most exciting film around, but having seen it, we urge you to do so, whether you're a footy fan or not.
Who's in it? Michael Sheen, Timothy Spall, Colm Meaney, Jim Broadbent
What's it about? A look at Brian Clough's 44-day reign as the coach of Leeds United.
What type of film is it? Drama
Is it any good? I hate football, I know nothing about football and I’ve never played football but I loved this film. Michael Sheen is a legend as is Brian Clough – he was the first real superstar football manager complete with the ego, lifestyle and razor sharp retorts. Whether or not you know anything about him or his career there is no denying that this is a gritty and gripping drama that will suck you in. The supporting cast of Timothy Spall, Jim Broadbent etc are in the Premier League – if it was a football team it would be the England team in 1966. The care and attention given to making this movie authentic is admirable, although whether half of what is acted out here actually happened might be up for discussion. Brilliant and possible the best British film of the last 5 years.
