56 year old Francis Farrell was found with a head injury in the early hours of Sunday 17 June on Frog Lane and died later in hospital.

A post-mortem examination found that the cause of Francis's death was a head injury.

Two men aged 22 and 23 were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Rawlinson said; "Francis was a 56 year-old man, who was attacked on Fathers Day while minding his own business on his way home after enjoying an evening out in Wigan town centre "

"Whoever is responsible left him injured, unconscious and lying half in the road on Frog Lane."

"I do not want the public to jump to conclusions now that two men are in custody. Despite this development I still want to hear from members of the public and those who have information that will be vital to this investigation."
