Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Jackson, of Bolton CID, said:
"We will be carrying out a number of inquiries in the area today, including house-to-house visits and searches of the local area, so it is important we do not overly alarm people and let them know what is going on.

"We are still in the process of establishing exactly what has led to this man suffering multiple stab wounds but we believe he was involved in some sort of altercation in the Bolton Road area.

"We will conduct a thorough investigation and I would appeal to anyone who has information that may help to come forward.

"Two people have been arrested and will be questioned by officers, but we are at the very early stages of our inquiry so again I would appeal to anyone with information to call us."
