A man has been arrested on suspicion of starting a flat fire in Greater Manchester that left a woman fighting for her life in hospital.

Greater Manchester Police said another man was also left with burns after the blaze at the address in Redbrook Road, Ince last night.

Emergency workers evacuated around six nearby flats as firefighters battled to extinguish the flames.

They remain at the scene and are working to make the area safe, police said.

A force spokesman said a man has been arrested on suspicion of causing arson with intent to endanger life and has been taken into police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington said: 'We are keen to stress that we are at the very early stages in our inquiries and we are keeping an open mind as to what has happened.

'The full details are not clear and I therefore do not want members of the public to think they do not need to tell us what they know because we have made an arrest.

'I would therefore ask that any witnesses, or anyone with any information, calls police as soon as possible.'

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
