Police have been called to an area underneath a flyover of the M60 near Stockport after reports that human remains had been found.

Detective Chief Inspector Sara Wallwork, of Stockport CID, said: "We are in the process of conducting a careful examination of the location and only when this has been done will we begin to recover the remains for further examination."

"At this stage we do not know if there are any suspicious circumstances or even if these are the full remains of a body, whether they belong to a man or woman, adult or child or how long they have been there.

"I know there will be some concern and speculation and I would ask the local community to bear with us while we carry out what will need to be a careful and thorough investigation.

"I would also ask that anyone who has any information that could be of assistance to this investigation to please call us."

The A34 slip road onto the M56 has been shortened while police deal with the incident and there is likely to be a police presence at the location for several days.
