Investigations are underway following a carjacking in Hyde.

Five people are currently in custody.

It happened just after 11am on Friday 19th August, three masked men broke into a house on Dowson Road, Hyde, and attemped to take the keys for an Audi A3 Sport that was parked outside.

The 43-year-old victim managed to snatch the car keys and ran out of the house, but one of the offenders caught up to her and grabbed the keys off her, knocking her to the floor.

The men then got into the Audi and drive off. The car was later found abandoned in the Hollingworth area.

A short time later three men aged 20, 21 and 26 were arrested on suspicion of robbery and a 20-year-old woman on suspicion of assisting offenders. A fourth man, aged 36, was arrested a short time later nearby on suspicion of robbery. All remain in custody for questioning.

Police are appealing for any one who witnessed the incident and in particular want to speak to the driver of a Ford Ka in Hyde who stopped officers and gave details of where the Audi had gone.

Inspector Dave Loughlin, based at Hyde, said:

'There is no doubt that the victim would have feared for her safety and in some ways we are fortunate that she wasn’t mady injured in the tussle for the keys.

'She was treated for shock and was seriously shaken up by what happened.

'However, we managed to make a number of swift arrests which is testament to the hard work of the officers involved. I hope this reassures her and the wider community that we act quickly when criminals bring violence into Hyde.

'Can I also take this opportunity to remind members of the public that although offences of this type are rare they are reminded to keep their addresses secure at all times and where possible store vehicle keys away from the main doors to the home.'
