A man has been jailed for 6 years after he bit part of a man's ear off and spat it at him at a pub in Radcliffe.

Terence Rankin from Seddon Avenue, Radcliffe was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court.

At around 10.30pm on Tuesday 19 April 2011, the 53-year-old victim was stood at the bar of the Morning Star pub, Thomas Street, Radcliffe when he was approached by Rankin.

He asked the victim if he knew who he was, he said no, before he grabbed him and bit his ear off.  He spat it out towards the victim, before verbally abusing him and walking out.

A number of customers were inside the pub at the time and witnessed the incident.

Rankin was later arrested following police inquiries.

Detective Constable Martin Brown from Bury CID said: "This was a horrific and unprovoked assault that has left an innocent victim permanently disfigured and in need of further painful reconstructive surgery . Customers were left shocked and upset by the attack.

Rankin has proved he is a very violent man and showed no mercy to his victim. Thankfully he will now spend a significant amount of time in prison where he can reflect on his actions. The sentence sends out the message that this type of barbaric behaviour will not be tolerated and goes to ensure the safety of the community at large."
