Police are trying to track down a driver after an 8 year old girl was knocked down in a hit and run in Wigan.

It happened on Kendal Road in Ince at about 6.45pm yesterday.

The girl was playing with friends when she collided with a car, which can only be described as either a silver-coloured small or medium sized car, that was travelling up Kendal Road towards Belle Green Road.

The driver did not stop at the scene.

Moments later, a second silver car stopped and the driver got out and lifted the injured girl to the side of the road and then called for help. This car was not involved in the collision in any way.

The girl, who is local to the Ince area, is currently at Wigan Hospital being treated for a broken left leg.

Police Constable David Newton said:

'We are making inquiries to try and trace the driver of the car, but we need the public to help us with our investigation. If you saw a silver car in the Kendal Road or Belle Green Road areas at about the time of the collision, or perhaps even caught a partial registration number, we need to speak to you.

'I do not want to speculate on why the driver did not stop, but it is important we find this driver not least because the girl's family deserve to know what happened.

'If you were the driver and you are reading or hearing this, then please do the right thing and get in touch with police immediately.'
