Chelsea Ladies Enjoy Sport In The City

Players from Chelsea’s Ladies team help out at free football taster sessions for young people in Southwark

This summer children and young people throughout London have been making the most of Help a Capital Child’s ‘Sport in the City’ free sports taster sessions, funded by Chelsea FC and the Football Association.

This week one group in Southwark were also joined by members of the Chelsea Ladies team, who helped them hone their football skills.

Claire Rafferty, who played for England in the recent Women's World Cup, was joined by fellow defenders Sophie Perry and Naomi Cole, midfielder and local girl Drew Spence and striker Becky Jane.

'It's fantastic for us to get involved in these sorts of projects and offer our expertise to these children,' said Claire. 'Sport is very important, it teaches you a lot, like sportsmanship and team work and it's a vital part of growing up.'

The young people were delighted when the Ladies challenged them to a kick around. Goalie Kieron Stansbury, 14, enjoyed the game. “It was good fun and not too tough.  And great that it was free.”

Sport in the City sessions have been taking place in Southwark, Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Hackney and Islington. Activities have included swimming, street dance, tennis, gymnastics and of course football.

Check out the sessions in your area – there’s still time to sign up for some of them!
