Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Tommy (Andrew Garfield) and Ruth (Keira Knightley) are three children whose lives become inextricably intertwined after meeting at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. But Hailsham isn't an ordinary school and Kathy, Tommy and Ruth don't have an ordinary purpose.
When they leave the protection of Hailsham as young adults, they must not only face the outside world - a world that is foreign and unfamiliar to them all - but they must also come to terms with the sinister and haunting truth behind their existence, the love they feel for each other and the ramifications of these factors combined.
