A Nottinghamshire man's been jailed for nearly three years 'horrendous' injuries caused to a baby in the weeks before her death.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to causing or allowing serious physical harm to the baby girl in 2012.

He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday (Thursday 8 January 2015) to two years and eight months in jail.

The baby girl taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in December 2012 with breathing difficulties but died there.

A post-mortem examination showed broken bones that had happened to her over a number of months but the cause of the little girl's death was was inconclusive.

Detective Chief Inspector Yvonne Dales said: “This is a tragic case in which a baby girl suffered some horrendous injuries during her very short life. She couldn’t tell anyone what was happening to her and unfortunately the nature of these injuries meant it took her death to expose them.

“Her relatives are left with unanswered questions over the cause of her death, but I hope this court outcome at least goes a way towards giving them some sense of justice — that for the distress she suffered in the weeks before she died her voice has ultimately been heard.”
