Nottingham has more drivers with 12 points, still driving, than any where else in the country.

Normally 12 points means a ban but it's at the discretion of the judge.

It's not young drivers with all those points though, there are more drivers in the 26-35 age bracket who are driving with 12 points or more than any other.

There are 180 drivers with 12 or more points in Nottingham and more than 6,000 in the whole of the UK.

Points Don't Mean Dangerous Drivers

Neil Greig from the Institute of Advanced Motorists doesn't think it means there are more dangerous drivers in Nottingham though:

'It may be that perhaps the courts of Nottingham, I wouldn't use the words 'soft touch' but perhaps they're more easily to be convinced that you have a reason for carrying on after 12 points.

'Often we find it's more down to issues with the way local courts are working rather than the fact you have more dangerous drivers on the roads.'

According to the Government's driving and transport department website if you have 12 or more penalty points, you could be banned from driving for:

  • 6 months if you get 12 penalty points or more within 3 years
  • 12 months if you get a 2nd disqualification within 3 years
  • 2 years if you get a 3rd disqualification
