Police have told Capital that teams have been working through the night to sort out a crash between 7 cars and a lorry on the M1 in Leicestershire.

The collision happened just before 7 o'clock.

The M1 was closed both ways between junction 21a and 22 for more than 9 hours.

Police have told Capital the northbound carriageway will probably stay shut into this afternoon, a diversion route is in place.

Significant Disruption
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is carrying out an investigation. Parts of the M1 are being resurfaced because of diesel which spilled onto the carriageway.

One man, a 48-year-old from London, has died and three other people have been taken to hospital, two of them with serious injuries.

A 36 year old woman, arrested in connection with the incident, is in custody.

Inspector Jason Ross, head of roads policing, said:

'Teams have been working throughout the night on what is a very complex situation as a result of a collision involving eight vehicles.

'The road closures have caused significant disruption and I want to thank motorists for their continued patience.

'I also want to appeal to anyone who saw the collision or any of the vehicles, before or after the incident, to contact us. You might not have been able to stop at the time but we’d still like you to get in touch.'

Diversions

Northbound traffic approaching the closure at junction 21a can follow the 'hollow black triangle' diversion symbol onto the A46 northbound.

Then join the A50 northbound towards Markfield, to then re-join the M1 at junction 22.
