Froch: Still World Champion

Nottingham boxer Carl Froch proved any doubters wrong last night by beating Londoner George Groves and retaining his titles as world champion.

He knocked Groves out in the 8th round in front of 80,000 at Wembley Stadium, that's the second biggest boxing crowd since World War II.

Froch reckons his knock-out proves he's among the best fighters in the world.

The win brings to an end months of trash talk between the pair since Froch controversially beat Groves in the first fight between the two in November.

'I showed tonight why I'm a four-time champion of the world, why I've defended my world title 13 times on the spin

'I am amongst the best fighters in the world - that's who George Groves was in there with tonight.'

Groves taunted Froch in the build-up to the fight and predicted he would knock his opponent out with a left hook but that didn't happen.

The 26-year-old, however, was magnanimous in defeat while pledging to return 'bigger, better and stronger'.

Straight after Froch won, he got down on one knee in front of his girlfriend Rachael Cordingley but he said afterwards he didn't 'officially' ask her to marry him...because he couldn't sort a ring out in time. He went on to confirm marriage would happen though.

Celebrity backing

Stars like footballer Wayne Rooney had backed Froch to win before the fight saying his 'power and experience' would win through.

Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Redknapp and Zara Philips were all ringside for the fight.

Afterwards, Shadow Secretary for Defence and Gedling MP Vernon Coaker tweeted his congratulations, as did Nottingham gold paralympian Richard Whitehead, Notts Michelin starred chef Sat Bains, former Notts and England bowler Graeme Swann and the lads from Disclosure.

Selfie king and former Derby and Leicester footballer Robbie Savage couldn't resist a cheeky selfie too!!

Next Stop: Vegas

Carl's girlfriend Rachael Cordingley told Capital she'd love him to fight in the States next:

'Yes, hopefully Carl Froch's name in lights in Vegas would be incredible.

'But whatever he decides, I'll support him.'

However, British Olympic boxing gold medallist James DeGale wants to take on Froch for the IBF world super-middleweight title.

DeGale beat Brandon Gonzales last night and he's now the mandatory challenger to the Nottingham fighter.
