About Free Sport for All

Launched in 2008 by Lord Attenborough CBE, Founder and Life Patron of 95.8 Capital FM’s Help a London Child, Free Sport for All (FS4A) is the charity’s sports programme and aims to give children and teenagers the opportunity to take part in sport, especially young disabled people and those from less advantaged backgrounds.

Free Sport for All was funded thanks to money raised by ICAP in December 2007, and is being delivered in partnership with London sports bodies, who have both the knowledge and expertise to identify local needs, and the projects to run the activities.  The first of 20 projects have been running since autumn 2008 and are providing regular sport sessions for young disabled people , through the London Sports Forum for Disabled People and the 5 Pro-Actives London Partnerships.

One example of 20 projects being funded is the Panathlon Challenge where 100 young disabled people aged 9-18 from Westminster, Wandsworth, Southwark and Lambeth received 10 weeks of coaching sessions in the five sports of Boccia, Kurling, Polybat, Table Cricket and Athletics. Congratulations to Wandsworth who won the Central London competition in March and now go on to the London finals in June!

FS4A also gives sporting opportunities to young people from less advantaged backgrounds. The UK Fitness Network London Region (UKFN) in partnership with HALC, offered 267 free taster sessions in 12 London boroughs, of one hour each, to children aged 11-15 in February half-term 2009. UKFN added value by providing free venues, and HALC funded qualified coaches at each of the sports centres who had the local knowledge to promote the sessions.

There were 22 different sports and activities including Football; Netball; Hockey; Tennis; Basketball; Badminton; Squash; Gymnastics; Swimming; BMX; Streetdance/Breakdancing; Dance Mats; Martial Arts; Kickboxing; Trampolining; Futsal; Skateboarding; Table Tennis; Cheerleading; Multi-Sports; Exercise Classes; and Gym Sessions.
