The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund

Projects Global's Make Some Noise supports in your area deliver life changing work and help to give children a brighter future. Projects like the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund.

The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund is the charity supporting the Yorkshire Heart Unit at the Leeds General Infirmary. The money raised by Make Some Noise could be put towards equipment for the building of a new operation theatre, or to help families with their travel costs while they’re away from home travelling to and from the hospitals. It could also support the funding of INR testing kits, which test warfarin levels in patients to prevent children from taking time off school and to help them to feel in control of their condition.

Ruby’s Story

When Ruby was 3 days old, her parents found out she had a life threatening heart-condition, and required a heart operation at just four weeks old. Then in December 2010, once she had grown to a healthy size, Ruby underwent 9 hours of open-heart surgery. Her parents were petrified about handing her over to the surgery team, but they knew that without this surgery she would die anyway. Ruby recovered well from her operation, and today attends mainstream school and is a lively, busy chatterbox who does not let her condition stand in the way of leading a normal life.

Ruby’s parents were offered counselling which was funded by the project in the run up to her second operation; which helped them a great deal, and they take comfort in knowing that advice and support is available whenever they need it in the future.

They said “We know that she will need more surgery within the next couple of years but we're not fazed. She is in the right hands. She has done amazingly well and we are so proud of her.”
