Police have released a CCTV video after a man was left needing 22 stitches following an attack on Broad Street.

The 21-year-old from Cannock had been on a night out in Bar Risa on Broad Street when he was subjected to an unprovoked attack outside the bar in the early hours of 5 April.

He was first approached by his attacker inside the club, who threw a punch and knocked him to the floor whilst on the dancefloor.

The club’s security then asked the group to move outside.  The victim demanded to know why the man had assaulted him. His attacker then punched him again, before a second man also joined in and punched him to the face.

The clubber and his friend ran off and managed to get away from the scene in a taxi but the reveller’s injuries were so severe he ended up going to hospital, where he received 22 stitches to his lip and facial cuts.

DC Antony Hammerton, from Birmingham Force CID, is investigating the assault and urges people to come forward to help their inquiry. "Broad Street is bound to have been busy with people still enjoying the nightlife or making their way when this attack happened," he said.

"It was around 2.45am on a Saturday and people would doubtless have been leaving the various pubs and clubs so may well have seen something and be able to help us identify those involved.

"The young man suffered serious facial injuries and has no idea why the group decided to attack him that night but is left with scars and distressing memories of his ordeal."

The suspect is described as a white man, of heavy, stocky build, around 5ft 10in tall, in his mid 20s to early 30s. He had a tattoo on his neck, spoke with a local accent and is possibly balding or receding on top.

Anyone with information should call Birmingham Central Major Investigation Team in Force CID by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
