A Birmingham headteacher's led tributes to a 13 year old boy who died on a family holiday in Lanzarote.

Logan Kehoe, a pupil at Bishop Challoner Catholic College in Birmingham, is reported to have drowned in a pool in Costa Teguise on the island's east side on Saturday, according to local media.

In a tribute to the youngster his headteacher Kevin McEvoy said he was "a much-loved and valued young student'' as well as an excellent footballer.

Friends also left tributes on the teenager's Facebook page, with one reading: "Sitting here asking, 'why you?'''

British consular officials confirmed the death and said they were assisting the boy's family.

In a statement from the Kings Heath-based school, Mr McEvoy said: "We were very saddened to hear the news about a much-loved and valued young student.

"Logan was fully involved in the daily life of the school and in after-school activities.

"He was highly regarded as an excellent young footballer who represented the school with distinction.''

"We are in close contact with Logan's relatives and our thoughts and prayers are for Logan and his family at this sad time.''

Mr McEvoy said pupils and staff were being provided with counselling and support.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote, on April 11.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.''

Local news outlet, La Voz de Lanzarote, reported the boy was found in a pool at an apartment complex but nothing could be done to save him, despite being given CPR by the emergency services.

Spanish police, the Guardia Civil, are investigating but reports said initial findings suggested it was a tragic accident.
