Forecasters say the winds will ease today after Birmingham was battered by gales yesterday - resulting in a man being critically injured when a tree crushed his car.

A passing ambulance stopped and its crew began to give help moments after it happened in Shenley Fields Road in Selly Oak shortly before 1.40pm yesterday. (Tuesday)

A further two ambulances and a paramedic area support officer attended.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The driver who had numerous injuries including a head injury was trapped in his car. With the help of the fire service, he was freed, placed on a scoop stretcher and, accompanied by the trauma team from the air ambulance, he was taken by land ambulance on blue lights to the major trauma centre at the nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.”
