Six people thought to be illegal immigrants were arrested today in the West Midlands and an HGV driver detained on suspicion of smuggling them into the country in a refrigerated lorry, police said

Officers were alerted at around 3.15pm by an emergency call from a member of the public reporting people jumping from the back of a truck in Brockhurst Crescent, Walsall, near the M6, West Midlands police said.

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group arrested three people, believed to be Vietnamese, at the scene along with the driver, a spokesman said.

A subsequent search revealed another three people, believed to be Iranian nationals, hiding nearby.

``The six have been arrested on suspicion of entering the country illegally while the driver will be questioned on suspicion of facilitating illegal entry to the UK,'' the spokesman said.
