Birmingham Post Office Robber Jailed

29 December 2014, 17:14

A Birmingham man has been jailed for nearly seven years for stealing thousands of pounds in a robbery at a post office.

33-year-old Jahmine Lee, from Sunridge Avenue, Newtown, stole a cash box containing several thousands of pounds at Rookery Road Post Office, Handsworth on February 4 2014.

He and an accomplice made off in a silver Lexus which was later found abandoned in Austin Road. An angle grinder and the empty cash box were also found nearby.

A search of the area revealed discarded clothing, including masks, and forensic tests sealed Lee’s fate after a DNA match was found on one of the masks.

Despite several attempts to locate Lee, he evaded capture until September, but officers closed in as he was about to board a plane to Spain at East Midlands airport.

Although the 33-year-old initially denied the offence, the wealth of evidence against him led to a guilty plea and he was sentenced to 6 years and eight months on Monday 22 December.

Investigating officer, DC Max Gebhard said: "We work closely with cash transport companies to ensure the safety of their delivery drivers. Fortunately the driver in this incident was unhurt and I am pleased that Lee has received a lengthy custodial sentence."

The accomplice has so far not been identified.
