About The Help A Capital Child Appeal

Our charity, Help a Capital Child, was set up in 1975 to help disadvantaged young people in our local areas. We support children and young people affected by abuse, homelessness, disability, poverty and illness.

This year in Birmingham we’re focusing our support on illness and the money that you help us to raise will fund specialist hospital units and care for young people with cancer.

Every year our celebrity friends queue up to join our presenters and take over Capital FM for the Help a Capital Child appeal. This programme of star-studded shows features incredible money-can’t-buy auction lots and opportunities for you to show your support. This years appeal will take place from Friday 14th October and Sunday 16th October and the money that you help us raise will fund specialist hospital units and care for young people with cancer.

When you’re a teenager, life should be all about hanging out with your mates, going to gigs and experiencing whatever life has to offer for the first time. But for six teenagers a day, life changes overnight when they are told they have cancer. Usually placed on a children’s ward or with elderly patients, young people often feel isolated when they have cancer, never meeting anyone else going through the same thing.

This is why we’ll be helping to fund care for these teenagers at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital which has over 700 patient stays per year. We want to help make sure that cancer doesn’t stop these teenagers in their tracks and that they are given the best possible quality of life and chances of survival.
