The tearful singer announces her departure hours after Steve Tyler also quits.

Jennifer Lopez has quit as a judge on American Idol, breaking down in tears as she told the show's host Ryan Seacrest that she would not be returning to the show.

The 'On The Floor' singer announced her departure from the programme just 24 hours after fellow judge Steven Tyler of Aerosmith also quit.

"I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do," J-Lo said.

She added: "It's gets so complicated as the kids get a little bigger. It just started feeling like something had to give."

The star, who has done two series on the programme, added that she and the other judges had enjoyed an "amazing run", but that it was time to move on from the show.

J-Lo had hinted that her time may be up on the TV talent show following Steven Tyler's departure on Thursday (12th July).

"Maybe it's time for me to go," she confessed. "It's been on my mind a lot, as you can imagine, and now it's like, "Do we continue on this journey?

"I've loved it so much. I enjoy the show so much. It's a tough decision either way."

The singer and Steven joined the panel two seasons ago alongside returning star Randy Jackson.

Former runner-up of the series Adam Lambert has also been linked to a role on the show and recently told Capital that he would "jump at the chance".
