Empire State of Mind was originally written by songwriter Angela Hunte while feeling homesick on a trip abroad. After initially being rejected by record producers, it was Jay-Z that decided to record it immediately after hearing it.
He chose to alter the verses to suit his style but kept the hook of the song intact. After hearing the piano intro, Jay-Z decided to use Alicia Keys after Mary J Blige was initially earmarked to feature.
The video was directed by Hype Williams, and was filmed mostly in black and white until the climax when the pair perform in Times Square. The anthemic tribute to The Big Apple has been a massive hit, with over 70 million 'hits' on youtube.
